Generations have encountered the sacred beauties of life at the tower atop Mount Constitution.

It’s more than just a tower. It’s a place of profound meaning.

But hard weather and heavy traffic have taken their toll.

Pocketing

When a stone (such as sandstone) is softer than the mortar holding it in place, “pockets” of wear and tear can form. These cracks let in the elements, causing further damage.

Onioning

The Pacific Northwest’s driving wind, rain, sleet and snow are literally peeling back the tower’s stones layer by layer—just like an onion.

General Wear

Further cracks have appeared in the stone. Rebar is heavily rusted in some parts. Many wood parts of the tower have also taken a beating from visitors and weather alike.

Without improvements, the tower might not last beyond our generation.

3. Preserve the Tower

A tower of the people by the people for the people

In many ways, the tower atop Mount Constitution is a tale of America’s democratic vision.

The land was donated for a state park in 1911 by Seattle shipbuilder Robert Moran for the express enjoyment of the people.

The tower was built during the Great Depression by the people—FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)—providing much-needed income to hundreds of families during the most desperate of times in our nation’s history.

And as it’s stood throughout the transformation of American society, one thing remains the same: the tower stands indisputably for the people as a refuge of wonder, rest and nostalgia.
